Dysphagia, commonly called swallowing disorders, is increasingly common among people with disabilities.
In general, healthy people can swallow with very little deliberate thought and effort. However, if the nervous system is disrupted due to a stroke or disease, then problems with swallowing can occur. Swallowing difficulties are referred to as dysphagia.
This training is designed
to equip caregivers with the skills and best practices required to support
individuals with Dysphagia. Learners will build foundational knowledge of
swallowing disorders including risks and preventative strategies to avoid
complications. The course also includes specific content about Texture
Modified Diets, the use of The Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Sore Risk
and the development of individualize Dysphagia Care Plans.
Dysphagia Training for Caregivers includes:
- Causes, symptoms, treatment and complications of swallowing disorders
- Strategies and preventative measures to assist the caregiver to manage dysphagia including:
- Texture modified diets
- Prevention of skin breakdown
- Oral care
- Medication administration
- Activities of daily living
- Mealtime experience and assistance, and
- The use of individualized Dysphagia Care Plans
The course has been developed by Registered Nurses, in good standing with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA).
$30 + GST per learner.
Organizations may purchase vouchers for their employees, or individual learners may purchase the course themselves.
